A World Championship That Begins at Sea

2025年11月13日〜17日の5日間、オーストラリア・シドニーにて『CMWC 2025 Sydney』が開催された。筆者が参加したのはそのうち2日間のみだが、今大会を語る上で欠かせないのがCMWC 2025 Sydney』専用フェリーだ。

メインレース会場は、シドニー湾に浮かぶ世界遺産・コカトゥー島。陸地と繋がっていないため移動手段はフェリーやボートのみ。参加者約150人は貸切フェリーで島へ向かった。

自転車にも乗らず、“シラフ”で全員が同じ場所で同じ時間を過ごす。この「強制的に集まらされる」時間は、互いの存在を認識し、自分がその一員であることを強く実感させる時間だった。音楽とともにフェリーは出港し、非日常が始まった。

From November 13–17, 2025, CMWC 2025 Sydney was held in Australia. I attended two of the five days, and what defined this edition was the ferry transfer.

The main race venue was Cockatoo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Sydney Harbour. With no land access, about 150 participants traveled together by chartered ferry.

No riding. No racing yet. Just everyone sharing the same space and time, sober and present. That “forced gathering” made us aware of one another — and of being part of something larger. As music played, the ferry departed, and the extraordinary quietly began.

The Atmosphere Opens with Mess Games

決勝当日の11月16日、最初に開催されたのはTrack StandやFootDownなどのMessGameだった。

直後に決勝が控えているにもかかわらず、ライダーたちは自転車をぶつけ合い、派手に倒れ、笑いながらハグを交わす。本気で競い、本気で遊ぶ。その姿から、CMWCが順位を競うだけの“選手権”ではないことが伝わってきた。

On November 16, the day of the finals, the event opened with Mess Games such as Track Stand and FootDown.

Despite the final race approaching, riders crashed into each other, fell hard, and laughed while embracing. Competing seriously while playing just as seriously — it was clear that CMWC is more than a championship defined by rankings.

唯一無二のスタート風景

A One-of-a-Kind Start Line

決勝はルマン式の一斉スタート。寝かされた自転車にマニフェストが挟まれ、最後のブリーフィングを経て、ファイナリストたちは高さ約30mの岸壁を背に横一列に並ぶ。

メガホンサイレンが鳴り、全員が一斉に走り出す。その壮観さと特異さは、今でも脳裏に焼き付いている。

The final began with a Le Mans-style mass start. Bicycles lay on the ground with manifests clipped to them. After the final briefing, the finalists stood in a single line before a 30-meter cliff.

A megaphone siren sounded, and everyone sprinted forward at once. The spectacle remains vivid in my memory.

Make Money to Win — Delivery Race

決勝はポイント制のDelivery Race。各オーダーには報酬額が設定され、制限時間内にどれだけ多くの報酬を獲得できるかを競う。

ラッシュやダブルラッシュは高報酬だが、時間を過ぎればマニフェストはただの紙切れになる。ルート構築、時間配分、判断力。より現実のメッセンジャー業務に近いレースだった。

The final adopted a point-based delivery format. Each order carried a payout, and riders competed to earn as much as possible within the time limit.

Rush and double-rush orders offered higher rewards, but once the deadline passed, the manifest became worthless. Route planning, timing, and quick decision-making — it felt closer to real messenger work than a typical race.

映画のようなコース、即興劇のフィナーレ

A Cinematic Course, An Improvised Finale

コカトゥー島は変化に富んだ景観を持ち、どこを切り取っても映画のワンシーンのようだった。そこを個性的なメッセンジャーたちが駆け抜けていく。

制限時間が迫る中、ファイナリストたちはHQへ戻り、成果を提出し“退勤”する。順位は翌日まで分からない。互いを称え合う姿を見て、このレースはそこにいる全員でつくる即興劇なのだと感じた。

Cockatoo Island offered constantly shifting scenery — every angle felt cinematic. Riders with distinct styles cut through the historic landscape.

As the time limit approached, finalists returned to HQ, submitted their completed deliveries, and “clocked out.” Rankings remained unknown until the next day. Watching them congratulate one another, I felt this race was an improvisation shaped by everyone present.

Sydney Harbour — The After Party on the Water

レース後、フェリーは再び湾へ出た。ゴールデンアワーの海上で停船し、水上アフターパーティーが始まる。

若手もベテランも次々とダイブし、泳ぎ、語り合う。経験を重ねた大人たちが、全力で遊ぶ。その姿に、CMWCの核心があった。

After the race, the ferry returned to the harbour. At golden hour, it stopped, and the after party began on the water.

Young riders and veterans alike dove in, swam, and talked. Experienced adults playing wholeheartedly — in that moment, I saw the essence of CMWC.

CMWC goes on

筆者にとって3度目のCMWC。毎回違う学びがあり、毎回変わらない感動がある。

CMWCは世界大会であると同時に、世界のメッセンジャーコミュニティの交差点でもある。もし少しでも興味を持ったなら、ぜひ行動してほしい。次はミラノで、あるいはどこかの街で。

This was my third CMWC. Each edition brings new lessons, yet the same underlying emotion remains.

CMWC is both a world championship and a crossroads for the global messenger community. If this sparks even the slightest interest, take action. Maybe we will meet in Milan — or somewhere else on the road.
