Cycle Messenger World Championships(CMWC)とは世界中の都市で働くメッセンジャーのデリバリー能力を競う大会。そしてそれはただのレースイベントではない。

大会開催期間中の１週間ほど各国の同志達と日々終わらない宴を続けるメッセンジャーの祭典だ。

30年以上続くこのイベントは、まだ国際電話死ぬほど高くFAXやフライヤー、口コミしか伝達方法がない時代からはじまり、各都市のメッセンジャーによって継続的に運営されながら我々の価値観や平和的思想を築きあげてきた。

毎年オープンフォーラムにて翌々の開催国を決め、止まる事なく続くこの宴。

2025年の開催はオーストラリアのシドニー。

このCMWCで出会った仲間達と始めた自身のチーム、Slow Squad Internationalも１０周年を迎え、そのセレブレートも含め今回シドニーに渡った。

レースより遊びに本気な”いちメッセンジャー”の旅を個人的な視点で２回に分けてレポート！

The Cycle Messenger World Championships (CMWC) is an event where bicycle messengers from cities all over the world compete in their delivery skills. But it’s far more than just a race.

For about a week during the event, messengers from around the world gather and take part in what feels like a never-ending celebration — a true festival of messengers.

With over 30 years of history, CMWC began in a time when international calls were incredibly expensive, and communication relied on fax, flyers, and word of mouth. Since then, it has been continuously organized by messengers from each host city, shaping our shared values and a sense of peaceful community.

Each year, the host city for the following edition is decided through an open forum, keeping this ongoing gathering alive.

The 2025 edition was held in Sydney, Australia.

Slow Squad International — the team I started with friends I met through CMWC — also marked its 10th anniversary. With that celebration in mind, I made my way to Sydney.

This is a personal report, told from the perspective of just another messenger who takes “having fun” as seriously as racing — presented in two parts.

お前のカウチは俺のカウチ。俺のカウチはお前のカウチ。 メッセンジャーはシンプルなライフを送りつつも世界中を旅できるのは、国境を超えたメッセンジャー同士の助け合いの精神が先ほど述べた長年の活動で文化に最大限に浸透しているからだ。世界の縮図としてメッセンジャーカルチャーだけにスポットを当てればその世界観は完全なる平和である。貧乏人同士の小競り合いは絶え間ないけどね。

今回の旅は、自身が主催する多国籍バイクチームSlow Squadの相方マックスや、マイキーの家に転がり込んだ。

毎回このようなイベントがあると、スクワッドは皆で滞在する場所を通称「チャペル」と呼び床がびっしり埋まるほど、その様は海外から移り住んできた不法滞在者のアジトのようになる。そして朝から晩まで遊び明かし、普段簡単には会えない同志達と最高の時間を過ごす。ホストは最高の疲労とストレスも同時に感じ、終わった頃には謎の達成感と”最高の思い出”を手にいれる笑

この思いやりや助け合いの精神こそメッセンジャーの世界を成立させる１つの大きなポイントだ。

Messengers live simple lives, yet are able to travel the world — all because of the deep-rooted culture of mutual support that has been built over years among messengers across borders.

If you look at the world only through the lens of messenger culture, it feels like a perfectly peaceful society.Well… aside from the constant little clashes between broke people.

On this trip, I crashed at the places of Max — my partner in the international bike crew Slow Squad — and Mikey.

Whenever events like this happen, the Squad gathers and stays together in a spot we call the “Chapel.”The floor gets completely packed — it ends up looking like some kind of hideout for immigrants who just moved in from overseas.

From morning till night, it’s all about riding, partying, and spending the best time with friends you don’t usually get to see.

The hosts, on the other hand, go through extreme exhaustion and stress — but by the end of it, they’re left with a strange sense of accomplishment and nothing but the best memories. (lol)

This sense of care and mutual support is one of the key elements that makes the messenger world what it is.

シドニーのオフィス街のど真ん中にあるマックスのアジト。もともとオフィスの倉庫のような場所を改造した住処で地元の仲間達の溜まり場みたいな場所。シドニーシティーの中でも異質な生活スタイルな雰囲気であった。

Max’s spot sits right in the middle of Sydney’s business district.Originally an office storage space, it’s been converted into a living space — now serving as a hangout for local friends.

It had a lifestyle and atmosphere that felt completely out of place within Sydney’s city center — in the best way.

５日間の大会期間中は様々な場所でイベントが日々開催される。主に公園で集まり酒を飲むをベースに街の各地で交流会が行われる。

During the five-day event, gatherings and activities take place across the city every day.Most of them are centered around meeting up in parks, drinking, and connecting — with different spots around the city turning into places for exchange and community.

移動はもちろん自転車。どの国の都市部でも言える事だが旅をする上で１番利便性のある移動手段である。行きたい場所までドアtoドアでいける。しかも無料で！

Of course, we get around by bike.It’s true in any city — the most convenient way to move while traveling. You can go door to door, wherever you want. And best of all, it’s free.

皆で海外沿いで休憩しながら、シドニーのシティーボーイ達最短のビーチだと見本を見せてくれるマックス先生。東京でいうとお台場？それよりは遥かに綺麗かもしれない感じではあった。

Taking a break along the coast with everyone, Max — our teacher — showed us the closest beach for Sydney city boys.

Maybe like Odaiba in Tokyo? Though honestly, it felt way cleaner than that.

満を持して向かったシドニーの遊園地は休館日だったよ！

After all the hype, we finally made it to the amusement park in Sydney — and it was closed.

メッセンジャーを中心にスタートしたSlow Squad International。26年で早い事１０周年を迎え今回のCMWCのイベントで１０周年を祝う写真展を開催することになった。

場所はシドニーの108WAREHOUSEというアパレルショップ。

展示はスクワッドが撮り溜めた100枚ずつの写真をそれぞれの持ち合い、1000枚展示してみような試みをした。また、108とコラボ商品を作りポップアップを開催した。

Slow Squad International, originally formed around bicycle messengers, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2026.To mark the occasion, we held a photo exhibition during CMWC.

The venue was 108WAREHOUSE, an apparel shop in Sydney.

For the exhibition, each member of the squad brought around 100 photos they had been collecting over time, resulting in an ambitious display of about 1,000 images.We also collaborated with 108 to create exclusive products and held a popup alongside the exhibition.

おかげさまで１０周年！ありがとう！！ざっくり700枚くらいの10年間の記録を展示させてもらった。

Thanks to everyone, we made it to 10 years — thank you!!We were able to exhibit roughly 700 photos documenting the past decade.

次国開催地やメッセンジャーの活動を語り合うオープンフォーラム。

時代に伴いメッセンジャーの数は肌感だが年々減少しているように感じる。

ちなみに今年の開催国はイタリアのミラノ。来年27年の開催国はコロンビアのボゴタまで決まっている。このように世界中の様々な都市で開催され仲間で集まることを楽しみに日々の都市での業務に励むメッセンジャーも少なくない。

With the times, it feels like the number of messengers is gradually declining year by year.

This year’s host city is Milan, Italy, and Bogotá, Colombia has already been selected for 2027.With the event moving across cities around the world like this, many messengers stay motivated in their daily work, looking forward to gathering with friends again.

公園で風呂敷広げてディールをするスロースクワッド。それぞれの各都市で制作されたプロダクトをシェアしシノギを削り合うスクワッド達。旅の費用もままならないでチケットだけにぎしめてでもなんとかするのがスクワッド流。

夜の時間があけば、スクワッドのバーガーが経営するSLEEVE MASTERSにてせっせとタトゥーをいれる。店内はシドニーローカルと海外の来客で馬鹿騒ぎである。

Whenever there’s time at night, we head to Sleeve Masters — a shop run by Burger from the Squad — to get tattoos done.

The place is always packed with Sydney locals and visitors from overseas, turning into a wild, chaotic party.

"toydog! お前には特別なのをプレゼントするよ!Let's get some crazyyyyy 1!!"とか言われて帰国前に軽くよったら太もも１面にくっそでかいのをスーベニアにいただいた。感想？

くっそいたかったです。

“Toydog! I got something special for you, let’s get some crazyyyyy!!”That’s what he told me. I stopped by real quick before heading home… and ended up getting a massive piece across my entire thigh as a souvenir.

How was it?

It hurt like hell.

ちなみにこちらはマイキーの働くThirteen Feet Tattooにて、オークランド支部のJDRがコウモリのタトゥーをぶちかましている図。

Meanwhile, over at Thirteen Feet Tattoo — where Mikey works — JDR from the Auckland squad is getting a bat tattoo blasted on.

綺麗にぶちかまされました！Cleanly blasted!

”toydog!お前になんか入れてあげるから好きなもん教えてくれ！"って言われなにも思い浮かばなかったんで、オーストラリアといえばニモかカンガルーかコアラかハチミツだったんで、ぎりぎり著作権にひっかからなそうな”ニモ風”のパッケージングのお菓子がオーガニックスーパーにあったんでそれを入れてみました。

感想？かわいいね。

“Toydog! I’ll put something on you — tell me what you want!”But nothing really came to mind. When I think of Australia, it’s Nemo, kangaroos, koalas, or honey.

Then I found this snack at an organic supermarket with a “Nemo-style” package — just barely safe from copyright, I guess — so I went with that.

Thoughts?

Pretty cute...
