2025年11月13日〜17日の5日間、オーストラリア・シドニーにて『CMWC 2025 Sydney』が開催された。全5日間のうち2日間のみではあるが、本イベントに参加した筆者が現地の様子を前後編にわたってレポートしていく。

From November 13 to 17, 2025, CMWC 2025 Sydney was held over five days in Sydney, Australia.Although I was only able to attend two of the five days, this report will document what I experienced on site across a two-part series.

『CMWC 2025 Sydney』とは？ / What is CMWC 2025 Sydney?

『Cycle Messenger World Championships』の略である「CMWC」。都市の中を自転車で走り、さまざまな荷物を運ぶ「サイクルメッセンジャー」の世界大会であり祭典だ。

街中で配達を繰り返すメッセンジャーの仕事を落とし込んだデリバリーレースだけでなく、自転車によるさまざまなコンテスト、ライドやアートショーなどのコンテンツが約1週間にわたって開催される。そんなCMWCは1993年のベルリン大会から端を発し、毎年世界のどこかの都市で開催されている。日本でも、2009年に東京、2023年に横浜にて、計2大会が過去に開催されてきた。

そして今回、第31回目を記録する2025年大会が開催されたのは、オーストラリア・シドニー。オーストラリアでは2006年（シドニー）、2015年（メルボルン）に続く、3回目の開催となった。

CMWC stands for Cycle Messenger World Championships, a global championship and festival for bicycle messengers who ride through cities delivering all kinds of packages.

In addition to delivery-style races that replicate real messenger work, CMWC features various bike-related contests, rides, and art shows held over roughly a week.The event began in Berlin in 1993 and has since been hosted annually in cities around the world. In Japan, it has been held twice: Tokyo in 2009 and Yokohama in 2023.

The 2025 edition, marking the 31st CMWC, was held in Sydney, Australia.This was Australia’s third time hosting the event, following Sydney in 2006 and Melbourne in 2015.

「南半球」であり「島国」/ A Southern Hemisphere Island Nation

年に1度、主催都市のメッセンジャーコミュニティによる多大なる努力や主体性の末に開催されているCMWC。主催都市が掲げるさまざまなビジョンやミッションの集大成がCMWCであることから、大会としての特色は毎年異なる。

そういった大会が意図するものとは別に、今大会の特色を挙げるなら、「南半球の島国」という地理的背景が1つ挙げられるだろう。地続きのヨーロッパやアメリカ大陸でもなければ、日本のように島国ではあるもののアジア諸国から数時間で渡航できるような国でもない。

そんな”誰にとっても遠い”南半球の島国であるオーストラリア・シドニーで開催された今大会には、約150人のレース出場者が国内外から集まった。

例年のCMWCと比較すると、出場者数は多い方ではない。しかし、本レポートの後編でも綴っていくが、出場者数が150人ほどに留まり、そして”誰にとっても遠い”シドニーだったからこそ、そこに辿り着いた者同士で共有された興奮や時間は、とてもアツく濃いものだったと記憶している。誰もが1人ひとりの存在感を感じずにはいられない、そんなCMWCだった

Beyond the organizers’ intentions, one defining feature of this edition was its geographical context as a southern hemisphere island nation.Australia is neither part of a land-connected Europe or the Americas, nor an island nation like Japan that is only a few hours from neighboring countries.

CMWC is held once a year through the immense effort and initiative of the host city’s messenger community. Because each event reflects the organizers’ visions and missions, every CMWC has its own distinct character.

At this CMWC, held in Sydney—far for everyone—around 150 racers gathered from both within Australia and abroad.

Compared to other CMWC editions, the number of participants was not particularly large. However, as I will describe in Part 2, because only around 150 people made it—and because Sydney was far for everyone—the excitement and time shared among those who arrived felt especially intense and meaningful.It was a CMWC where everyone couldn’t help but feel the presence of each individual.

メインレース会場は世界遺産 / The Main Race Venue Was a World Heritage Site

筆者がこれまでに訪れたCMWCは、2023年の横浜、2024年のチューリッヒのみ。国内最大級の競技場一帯にコースが組み込まれ、何階層にも輪が重なるスタジアムの構造が活かされていた『CMWC 2023 Yokohama』のメインレース。

翌年の『CMWC 2024 Zurich』では、幹線道路に跨る陸橋を中心に、その両端に広がる商業施設エリアやマンション内の共同スペース、実際の信号などがコースに組み込まれていた。そして今回の『CMWC 2025 Sydney』のメインコースの舞台となったのは「Cockatoo Island（コカトゥー島）」。

シドニー湾に浮かぶ面積約0.2k㎡（東京ドーム約4個分）に及ぶ島であり、島自体が世界遺産（文化遺産）として登録されている。人は住んでいないものの、観光地として開放されている島だ。

しかし2025年11月15日、11月16日の2日間だけは、そんな歴史ある世界遺産のコカトゥー島を、おそらく史上初めて、特大バッグを背負い自転車を縦横無尽に駆るメッセンジャーたちが埋め尽くしたのだ。

19世紀には囚人監獄や大規模な造船・修理施設、教育訓練所などが置かれ、さらにヨーロッパ人が入植する前の6万年間は、シドニーの先住民の集会所としても使用され、アボリジニ、シドニー、オーストラリアの歴史を古くから刻んできた。

Prior to this, the only CMWCs I had attended were Yokohama in 2023 and Zurich in 2024.At CMWC 2023 Yokohama, the main race course was built throughout one of Japan’s largest stadium complexes, fully utilizing its multi-layered circular structure.

At CMWC 2024 Zurich, the course centered around a bridge spanning a major road, incorporating shopping districts, residential common areas, and real traffic lights.For CMWC 2025 Sydney, the main course took place on Cockatoo Island.

Located in Sydney Harbour, the island covers roughly 0.2 square kilometers—about four Tokyo Domes in size—and is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural site. While uninhabited, it is open to the public as a tourist destination.

Yet for just two days—November 15 and 16, 2025—this historic World Heritage site was, perhaps for the first time ever, completely taken over by messengers charging across it on bikes with oversized bags on their backs.

In the 19th century, the island housed prisons, large-scale shipbuilding and repair facilities, and training institutions. For more than 60,000 years before European settlement, it served as a gathering place for Sydney’s Indigenous peoples, embedding Aboriginal, Sydney, and Australian history deep into the land.

予選はタイムアタック / Qualifying Was a Time Trial

11月15日（土）開催されたメインレースの予選。「OPEN」「WTNB」の2つのカテゴリーへエントリーした全ライダーが出場し、翌日の決勝進出を目指す。※「OPEN」誰もがエントリーできるカテゴリー※「WTNB」女性、トランスジェンダー、ノンバイナリー、バイセクシャルを申告する者のカテゴリー

予選の内容はシンプル。1枚のみのマニフェスト（指示書）をどれだけ早く完了できるかを競うタイムアタック。

各々の好きなタイミングでスタートの意をHQで申告すると、エントリー名と申告時間が記録されるとともに、予選のマニフェストが手渡される。それがレーススタートの合図だ。マニフェストに書かれた指示を全て完了させ、再びHQへ戻ってくると完了時刻が記録され、所要時間が計算されるという仕組み。

ただしコースは全て一方通行。一度ルートを誤れば、迅速にルートを修正・再設計することが求められる。たった1つのルートミスが数分のロスとなり、レースの順位を左右する。

コカトゥー島全域に散りばめられたチェックポイントは計16箇所。約20通りの「A地点からB地点へ」というPick & Dropの直行便をより早くこなすため、ライダーたちは自ら設計したそれぞれのルートを走っていく。

各チェックポイントでは、配達する荷物は託されず、代わりにマニフェストへのサインやスタンプが各オーダーを完了させた証明となるのだが、ほとんどのライダーが予選レースには不要とも言えるメッセンジャーバックを背負っていたのも印象的だった。

限られたレース実施時間が設けられているとはいえ、各々が好きなタイミングでスタートできるタイムアタック。コースの混雑具合を見計らう者、徹底的に質問する者、勢いよく先陣を切る者、順番をずらして友人同士で応援し合う者……三者三様だ。

The main race qualifying round was held on Saturday, November 15.All riders entered in the two categories—OPEN and WTNB—competed for a place in the finals the following day.OPEN: a category open to anyoneWTNB: a category for riders who identify as women, transgender, non-binary, or bisexual

The qualifying format was simple: a time trial to see how quickly each rider could complete a single manifest.

When riders declared their start at HQ at a time of their choosing, their name and start time were recorded and they were handed their qualifying manifest—this marked the start of the race.Once all orders on the manifest were completed and the rider returned to HQ, the finish time was recorded and the total time calculated.

All routes were one-way only. A single wrong turn required immediate rerouting and redesign, and even one mistake could cost several minutes and decide race placement.

There were 16 checkpoints scattered across Cockatoo Island.To complete roughly 20 different A-to-B pick-and-drop orders as quickly as possible, riders designed and rode their own routes.

At each checkpoint, no physical package was handed over; instead, signatures or stamps on the manifest served as proof of completion. Still, it was striking that most riders raced with messenger bags they arguably didn’t need for the qualifier.

Although the race was held within a limited time window, it was a time trial where riders could start whenever they chose. Some waited for the course to clear, others asked endless questions, some charged out immediately, and others staggered their starts to cheer on friends—everyone approached it differently.

激坂の攻略が鍵 / Steep Climbs Were the Key

マニフェストに書かれた内容は手渡しされるまで確認できないものの、レースの概要や質問はオーガナイザーに聞くことが許されている。

コカトゥー島には標高約30mの高台があり、コースは主に平地エリアと高台エリアの上下2層に分かれている。この上下を行き来する唯一のルートが、その激坂だった。

島全域に張り巡らされたレースコース。走り終えたライダーの多くが攻略の鍵として挙げていたのは、「激坂を登った回数」だった。

固定ギアやカーゴバイクで挑んだライダーの多くが苦戦した激坂。この坂を往復する回数を極力減らし、効率よくチェックポイントを回ることが、攻略の鍵だったと多くのライダーが語っていた。

After finishing the race, many riders pointed to one key factor: how many times they had climbed the steep hill.

Many riders on fixed-gear bikes or cargo bikes struggled with the climb. Minimizing the number of times they had to go up and down that hill and efficiently linking checkpoints was repeatedly cited as the key to success.

While the contents of the manifest could not be seen until it was handed out, riders were allowed to ask organizers questions about the race format in advance.

Cockatoo Island has a high point of about 30 meters above sea level, and the course was largely divided into lower flat areas and upper elevated areas. The steep hill was the only route connecting the two.

ファイナリストは決勝前夜パーティーで発表 / Finalists Announced at the Pre-Final Party

コカトゥー島でのレース1日目を終えた参加者たち。各自のレースタイムは把握しているものの、決勝進出枠や条件、ライバルのタイムを知らされぬまま、フェリーは参加者を乗せてシドニーの街へと戻る。その後、『CMWC 2025 Sydney』のグループチャットに「決勝進出者のリストは準備でき次第、パーティー会場に張り出す」と告知が流れた。

After finishing day one of racing on Cockatoo Island, participants boarded the ferry back to Sydney.Each rider knew their own time, but no one yet knew the number of finalist slots, the cutoff, or their rivals’ results.Soon after, a message appeared in the CMWC 2025 Sydney group chat: the finalist list would be posted at the party venue once ready.

パーティー会場は、Alley Catのフィニッシュ地点やエキシビション会場のすぐ近く。自転車に乗った参加者が次々と集まってくる。

テラスでは世界中のMessFamが歓談を楽しむ一方、レーザーやスポットライト、スモークに包まれたDJブースでは、予選やAlley Catを走り終えたとは思えないほどエネルギーに満ちた人々や、ボランティアたちが体を揺らしていた。

ひとまずレースを終え、最終決戦を控える夜。安堵と興奮の両方が漂う会場。「張り出されたぞ！」決勝進出者の名前がバーカウンター向かいの壁に貼り出されると、先ほどまでチルしていた人々が血走った目で友人を探し始める。

張り出されたのは、OPENカテゴリー上位53名、WTNBカテゴリー上位8名。巨大な巻物のような紙に、名前と予選フィニッシュタイムが手書きで順位順に並んでいた。

興味深いことに、記載されていた名前のほとんどはニックネームではなく本名。普段はニックネームで呼び合うメッセンジャー同士が、誰が誰なのか分からず戸惑う様子がどこか可笑しかった。

結果を見るに、決勝進出の目安は予選を1時間以内に終えること。OPENカテゴリーでは35位以降が50分台だった一方、1位は30分を切る圧倒的なタイムだった。

1位のタイムに驚愕しつつも、巨大な張り紙の前では、互いを称え合う者や、自分の本名を指さして興奮のままセルフィーを撮るライダーたちでしばらく溢れ返った。気づけば深夜0時を過ぎ、日付は決勝当日に変わる。自転車が無造作に積み重なった束から自分のマシンを引き出し帰路につく者、パーティーを続ける者、爆音のDJブース横のソファで眠り落ちる者……ここでもまた三者三様だった。

The party venue was located just steps away from the Alley Cat finish and exhibition space, and riders began arriving one after another on their bikes.

On the terrace, MessFam from around the world caught up with one another, while inside, lasers, spotlights, and smoke filled the DJ booth as riders and volunteers—despite having raced earlier—danced with explosive energy.

With the race day behind them and the final ahead, the party carried both relief and excitement.“It’s up!”As the finalist list was posted on the wall opposite the bar, people who had been chilling moments before suddenly scanned the crowd with bloodshot eyes, calling out to friends.

The list showed the top 53 riders in the OPEN category and the top 8 in WTNB, handwritten in order on a long sheet of paper like a giant scroll, with names and qualifying times.

Interestingly, most of the names listed were real names rather than messenger nicknames. Seeing messengers—who usually know each other only by nicknames—struggle to figure out who was who was oddly amusing.

From the results, it appeared that finishing within one hour was the benchmark for making the finals. While riders ranked 35th and below in OPEN were in the 50-minute range, first place finished in under 30 minutes—a dominant performance.

While many were stunned by the winning time, the area in front of the list soon filled with riders congratulating one another or excitedly pointing at their own names and taking selfies.

Before long, midnight passed and the date changed to final race day.Some riders pulled their bikes from the chaotic piles and headed home, others kept partying, and some fell asleep on sofas beside the thundering DJ booth—once again, everyone did things their own way.
